First, let me explain. Durian is a infamous fruit in Thailand, due to its incredibly strong and, well, awful smell. In fact, people are not allowed to bring durian into public places, including public transportation, in Thailand.
We were on the way into the nearby city for a stop at the grocery store when I was asked if I had ever tried durian. When I said no, we made a stop at the fresh market to pick some up.
It is hard to describe the smell that filled the car with the addition of the durian. Most closely, I would say it smells like a combination of really stinky feet and the pink liquid amoxicillin I was given as a child... only really, really potent. In fact, the driver said that it gives him a headache to be around durian.
At dinner, a plate of durian we placed near me and I temporarily moved it while eating my curry.
When it was time for our fruit dessert, I was told to select a piece and Dr. Tony showed me how you dive in.
My first bite was small and as I brought it close to my mouth (also my nose) I honestly thought I might throw-up, which would have been really, really embarrassing. I was told that the first bite is never that good, so I kept going... I tried a few more bites. I will say that it did get better, but it was still not something I need to try again ;)
