Teaching

Most days I spend about 3-4 hours teaching conversational English.  This usually starts with  short vocabulary lesson and then practice.

For example, today we discussed "this" and "that."

Since students already knew some of the body parts from Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, students would take turns:

A:  What is this? (point to body part)
B:  This is a _____________.

Then we added numbers into the mix.  I would hold up a certain number of fingers and ask "What is this?"  Students would respond, "That is five," or however many.

This is just one example of an activity I came up with.  Usually we have three or so activities in a class period and we often end by playing hangman with the words from the day's vocabulary.

I must admit, at first I was lost!!!  I tried to do too much vocabulary in one day-- now, I move slowly and concentrate on getting the students to talk.

A lot of my conversations during the day go like this.

Me: "Hello."
Student: "Hello, teacher."
Me:  "How are you today?"
Student: ''I am good, and you?
Me: "I am good.  Thank you."
Student: hilarious giggling
Me: "Good job!" and a thumbs up sign
