Weavers

Yesterday I went with Dr. Achara on a trip about 30 minutes away from the school to visit some weavers.

These weavers in this area were recognized by the queen in 1972, and they have been working together in a cooperative to sell their goods ever since.  They work with both cotton and silk threads to create some amazing patterns in spectacular colors.

I was not planning to buy a lot.  It is always good to have a plan.... and it is always good to know when to abandon a plan for a new one.   I ended up buying two jackets, a silk shirt, several scarves and some purple fabric that somebody (thanks, mom) might be able to make me a wrap skirt out of when I get home.  I also bought two yards of amazingly beautiful silk fabric.  Dr. Achara is gong to contact her dressmaker in Bangkok to take my measurements while I am there.  Then, she will make me an open style jacket and possibly a shirt wrap skirt to match :)

Speaking of Dr. Achara, she bought me a gift at the weavers as well, a pair of traditional Thai pants with a peacock design on them.  I have to admit, I think I will wear them in Chicago often, as they have an ornate band on the top that makes them very unique.  It was very nice of her to give me a gift after she has already given me so much by allowing me to stay at the school.

Buying fabric goods at the weavers made me feel good for two reasons.  First, everything was such good quality and so beautiful-- and the women that worked there at an eye for what might look good on me.  Second, the fact that my money is going to these weavers makes me feel good.  Many of them were working in the fields while we were there, because the weather was good, but they spend most days working two full-time jobs.  After working a full day, they will hope to weave a meter of fabric.
