First, there is at Vietnamese Village in Nakhom Phanom that was first started in the 1960s during the Vietnam War. The refugees crossed the Mekong from Laos and settled directly across the river. In fact, it is known that Ho Chi Minh's body guard ended up settling in this area. For this reason, there is a museum to honor the continued relationship between the Thai and Vietnamese people.
Second, there is a great park in Nakhom Phanom with a nice sized pond. Around it, there are paths, which are used as a running and biking path. It turns out that the pond was made with a French bomb was dropped during the Indo-China War. They decided to fill it with water and make a park...
Third, the Nakhom Phanom airport, which I flew into a week and a half ago, was originally created as a U.S. airbase during the Vietnam War. Bombers would fly from the base and over Laos to bomb Vietnam.
